Letters to the Editor Policy

All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Echo is no exception.

Rules governing letters to the editor in the Echo are:

  1. All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
  2. The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactorily identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying the publication if necessary to make the verification.
  3. Letters will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic primarily of local interest.
  4. If a letter attacks another group, the Echo will allow a response in the same edition.
  5. Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.

E-mail your letters to the Editor, which conform to the above rules to opinion@theecho.ca

A Message from the Mayor
By John MacEachern, Mayor
Mar 03, 2010

Some of you may be aware that in the near future a new land use policy is being proposed by the MNR. However you may not realize the full significance of this proposal to you personally and to the community as a whole.
The MNR will be holding public meetings featuring this proposal called Crown Land Use Atlas Harmonization (C.L.U.A.H.). A major impact on our community and to you personally comes from the guidelines which protect remote outfitter lakes and the areas surrounding them. These guidelines will determine where you will NOT BE ALLOWED to legally hunt, fish, pick blueberries, go sightseeing, go for a Sunday drive, or drive your quad and snowmobile.
Not being allowed to access prime areas near our community that are owned by the public is more than just a personal inconvenience. Limiting access to prime fishing and hunting areas within reasonable driving distance of our community diminishes our economic development opportunities. This direction harms our local businesses and reduces job opportunities within and around our community.
With the decline of mining and forestry in our area, road based tourist possibilities  must be enhanced not diminished. Some Remote outfitters on their websites claim that they have too many lakes for their use. Our community needs more road-based tourist opportunities. The answer to both situations seems obvious.
I need your support in demonstrating to the MNR that Manitouwadge is strongly motivated towards providing a shared environment which minimizes access restrictions.
The new guidelines will be presented at the C.L.U.A.H. open house, which will probably take place in March. The Manitouwadge Outdoor Enthusiasts (MOE) has assured me that the public will be made aware of the time and date as soon as it is available. Please be prepared to attend the C.L.U.A.H. open house where you can learn MNR’s views and where you can express your own.
