Letters to the Editor Policy

All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Echo is no exception.

Rules governing letters to the editor in the Echo are:

  1. All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
  2. The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactorily identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying the publication if necessary to make the verification.
  3. Letters will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic primarily of local interest.
  4. If a letter attacks another group, the Echo will allow a response in the same edition.
  5. Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.

E-mail your letters to the Editor, which conform to the above rules to opinion@theecho.ca

New in Town
Jul 07, 2010

Some three and a half years ago my partner, David, and I applied for permanent resident status here in Canada.  It was a long wait but on Monday 28th June we arrived here in Manitouwadge.  It was a huge step for us.  We had never been outside of Kitchener, where our cousins live, and all we had seen of the house we had purchased was a few pictures on the internet!  A leap of faith?  Total insanity?  Bravery?  Maybe a mixture of all three but whatever, we’re glad we did it!

The house is everything we thought it would be and more.  The surrounding area is beautiful.  Our neighbours have been so nice, lending us garden tools (the lawn was about a foot high!), offering advice about the local bears and showing us around.

What is encouraging is that, despite a downturn in the employment situation, people are still coming to the town (we’re not the only new arrivals it seems).  Most people we talk to have been here for 20 years plus, some came for a year or so and never left, others were born here and chose to stay.  This has made us feel like we chose the right place and hopefully we’ll stay too and be just as happy.

So to all the people who have taken us under their wing and welcomed us to the township, Thank You and we are happy to meet you all!
