White Throated Sparrow - Northern Ontario
Results for the Frosty Days Weekend bird count were pretty good, especially with one little surprise thrown in: a single White Throated Sparrow that has spent the whole winter here, in a yard up on Warbler Avenue. A pleasant surprise. Even though this species will sometimes over winter in the area, it's a rare treat to see them at this time of year. This one appears to have started the winter out pretty rough, likely quite ill or possibly injured from the description. But, through luckily finding a yard with shelter, protection and regular food, it has flourished and is now looking nice and healthy.
This year has proven to be the most successful for the Great Backyard Bird Count since I introduced Manitouwadge to it a few years ago. I had 6 other counters contact me with their results to include with my own. I don't know if anyone else did a count and submitted their own results online or not. I hope so but I'm very grateful to all who did participate.
